How to Create a Stub Zone in Windows Server 2012

Introduction

In this article you will learn how to create a Stub Zone in Windows Server 2012.

A Stub Zone is a copy of a Zone that contains only those resource records necessary to identify the authoritative DNS Server for that Zone.

Now we will see the procedure to create a Stub Zone in Windows Server 2012.

Step 1

First of all open the Administrative Tools from the Start Menu.

Now your Administrative Tools will be opened, here an option will be available named DNS, double-click on it to open it, but remember that this option will only be available if you have already Installed the DNS Server on your system.

Step 2

Now the DNS Manager Wizard will be opened, here on the left the DNS pane will be available, right-click on your Server Name and choose to "Add New Zone".

Now the New Zone Wizard will be opened, where first some information about this Zone will be provided, click on the "Next" button to start the process of adding the Zone.

Step 3

Now you will be asked to select a Zone type, here three Zone types will be available; Primary Zone, Secondary Zone and Stub Zone, so select the third option, in other words Stub Zone.

Now you will be asked how you want the Zone data to be replicated. I had chosen the second option, you can choose whichever you require.

Step 4

Now you will be asked to select a type of Lookup Zone that can be either a Forward Lookup Zone or a Reverse Lookup Zone.

On the next page you will need to provide the name for this new Zone, after providing the name click on the "Next" button.

Step 5

The next page will ask you about the Master Server, where you can either provide the IP Address for this Zone or can provide it's Name.

Now a brief description of your selection will be shown to you, click on the "Next" button to complete the process.
