Line Charts In Power BI

One of the most used chart, the Line chart is characterized by a series of data points connected by a line. Each point in the line corresponds to a data value in the given category.

This chart is mostly used to display data pattern or trend over a period of time. A combination of two or more than two lines can be used to compare pattern/trends over a period of time. For example,

  • Annual Sales
  • Months and units sold
  • Number of new customer per week

To draw a line chart in Power BI, follow the following steps,

Single Line Chart

  1. Put Date/Time value of the Axis This is the X-axis of the line chart.
  2. Put data field that you want to show (here Sales) in the line chart in the Value

The line chart is basically done. Now it is up to you to customize it as per your need.

Multiple Line Chart
  1. Put Date/Time value of the Axis This is the X-axis of the line chart.
  2. Put data field that you want to show (here Sales) in the line chart in the Value
  3. To further breakdown the sales by product, put the required field in the Legend field (here Product). Now it is up to you to customize it as per your need.


    The line chart can also be used with combination with bar chart (column chart) to represent various types of data.
