SharePoint 2013 : Large Workbook Size Error

This blog will describe how to fix this workbook issue which arises in Excel Services.

Problem

While working with SharePoint Excel Services Application you might have come across an error like this “Couldn't Open the Workbook. Wow, That's a big workbook. Unfortunately, we can't open a workbook larger than 10 MB. You'll need to open this in Excel.” Here we will see how to fix this error with simple value change in Excel Services Application in Central Administration.
 

 

Cause

The reason for these errors is the size of the workbook that is being opened is larger than the maximum size of a workbook that can be opened in Excel Services. The maximum size can be configured in the Excel Services settings.
Solution:

You can increase the maximum workbook size in Central Administration.

1. Open Central Administration -> Application Management -> Manage Service Applications.
   
   
2. Select your Excel Web Services Application.
   
   
3. Go to Trusted File Locations.
   
   
4. Choose the trusted file location of the file you are trying to open, most likely this should be ‘http://’.
   
   
5. Click on the drop down context menu under ‘http://’ and select ‘Edit’.
   
   
6. Scroll down the page to ‘Maximum Workbook Size’, increase the limit as required.
