Which way to improve myself

Question

I want to improve my codding skill and i have background about this subject. I have worked a few asp.net projects but i want to do someting on my own also improve myself. The point that i couldn't decide is: Is it better to first learn from books and improve knowledge or begin project and than learn how to overcome problems that i met? Nowadays i'm reading a lot of e-books. But i'm sure that when i began to work i will encounter problems and the points that i forgot. Otherwise if i begin to project the things, that i will be able to do, will be restricted because of lack of background. Because of this conflict i can't work efficiently. Which one will be better for me to improve myself faster and efficiently? I'd be appreciated if you may help me.
