Tablets to Surpass Notebook Shipments in North America

Posted by Michael Tanenbaum News | Current Affairs Nov 21, 2012
Tablets shipments will exceed notebook and mini-note shipments in North America for the first time in a trend that will become the norm, according NPD DIsplaySearch.
A fourth quarter report from NPD DisplaySearch finds that tablet shipments will far exceed shipments of notebooks for the first time in North American, a trend the research firm expects to continue into the future.

Tablet shipment in North America is forecast at 21.5 million units, far ahead of the 14.6 million notebook devices projected to ship in the same period. 2013 is the first year in which this trend will persist annually, with a projected 80 million tablets to 63.8 million notebooks. Worldwide, tablet shipments are not expected to eclipse notebook shipments in 2015.

Part of the rapid growth projected in North American tablet purchases is the high PC penetration rate in the United States, with 70% of households already owning a PC. The other big factor is that consumer preference, or attention, appears to have shifted away from notebooks as industry leaders place more emphasis on tablets and their related services.

The range of tablets to recently hit the market, with various display sizes and ecosystems, will make for a competitive holiday shopping season.
