Will Windows Phone 8 Secure Microsoft’s Mobile Future

It is probably too early to predict the future of Windows Phone 8 but reports have been much better than the previous versions. Either you call it good marketing, publicity or a better product but things seems to be improving for Windows Phone 8 and Microsoft.

Not only does Microsoft's, but also NOKIA’s, future relies on the success of Windows Phone 8.

A news published on Bloomberg reported that Windows Phone 8 is selling much faster than its predecessor, Windows Phone 7.x. As a matter of fact, Windows Phone 8 is selling 4-times faster, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said.

“Windows Phone 8 has been on sale for a few weeks and is off to a great start,” Ballmer said at a shareholders’ meeting today. Handsets made by HTC Corp. (2498) and Nokia Oyj (NOK1V)“are getting rave reviews and have initially sold out in many countries.”

Microsoft also got a good start with Windows 8. Yesterday, Microsoft announced that it has sold over 40 million Windows 8 within a month. That is much faster than Windows 7 or any other operating system.

If you ask me, I would call it a combination of everything. Windows Phone 8 is a much better and mature product now. The integration of Windows 8 and SkyDrive has helped people to stay on a single platform. Obviously, Outlook, IE and other productivity products have helped. On top of that, NOKIA has put everything in Lumia 920 and 820, whatever it got.

When I talked to people, the following are the core reasons why they prefer Windows Phone 8 over iPhone 5 or Galaxy S III:

  • Stay on a single platform (Microsoft). Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 are much alike and the user experience is similar.
  • Productivity is the key with the Integration with Windows 8, Outlook and other Microsoft products.
  • Nokia Lumia 920 is a better product.
  • Windows Phone 8 is a mature operating system.
  • People have more varieties of products to choose from. For example, I did not like the size of the Lumia 920 but I like the smaller, lighter and more powerful HTC.

Last point.

People are just sick of Apple and its monopoly. Well, at least I am. Forget the price of the iPhone itself, the damn cases and accessories are costly. I refuse to pay $39.99 for an iPhone case.

People are just sick of Apple!

Alright. May be not all people. But I am.

While iPhone and Android may be well ahead in the game but people are looking for better alternatives.

What is your take on this?

Windows phones are not at all competitive with Google's Android.I hope android will rock for the next 1 year.

People are sick of Apple,me too,but what about Android? i use both Android & Windows Phone 7.But i use Android much more than WP7.The notification system and its great wide of apps - even most of them are so simple&useless - are the greatest advantages of Android.and im so used to it,i dont use wp7 much except sessions and meetings :) i dont own a WP8 so i wont speculate on that one

Interesting link Michael. All (I literally mean ALL) of my close friends have an iPhone. Some moved from old phones, some from BlackBerry and so on. But all of them complain about new iPhone 5 charger and how they are not interested in getting new iPhone 5. As a matter of fact, couple of them are looking to switch. This is just my personal observation but you can see how a little thing like "Charger" can frustrate a consumer. This the point Apple seems to be missing and other companies may take advantage of this. What making them to stick with an iPhone 4/4S? Their APPs.

I think loyalty with smartphones is less set in stone than with desktops and laptops, PC or other. Before smartphones, upgrading phones was more routine. It's still new enough for consumers to consider that if they don't like something about their phone or their plan, they will change it. If I buy a desktop or a laptop, I want it to last and will pay more for it if that means it will (or if it makes me more attentive to maintaining its condition). I think people get sick of hype and companies sniping at each other by stereotyping consumers, but the main thing is the product and I do think Windows Phone 8 looks worth a try to someone curious and weighing options. I don't know if you've seen this: http://thenextweb.com/apple/2012/11/30/ibaby-boom-more-parents-name-their-kids-mac-siri-and-apple-in-2012/?fromcat=allMaybe 2013 could be the year of Smartglasses and Hekatons. Or Lumia. That would actually be a pretty nice name.

Sam, I agree with you from consumer perspective. Consumers do not trust Microsoft product. But I am seeing a trend where people have started complaining about Apple pricing. While they love apple products, pricing is affecting its sale. Other vendors are pushing heavy discounts. Perfect example is, Galaxy S III is top seller smart phone, has surpassed iPhone. I personally like iPhone but when time comes to buy a charger or case, I hate it. I hate Apple pricing. I am avoiding buying an iPhone 5 just because my current chargers (iPad, iPod, iPhone) will be useless. My son has an iPad and iPod. That said, if there is a choice like iPhone and not from Apple, I personally will go for it. BUT AGAIN, I am not a Mac fan anyway. I am also not a typical consumer either. Apple products are still a luxury. Average consumer can't afford them. While companies like Acer, Samsung keep bringing better and more products, eventually people will switch. If ECONOMY is bad, people will go for bargains. Back to Microsoft products. I have been using Windows 8 for a while now. I know Windows 7 is very stable. I hardly had any problems with it but Windows 8 is even a BETTER product. I am not talking about USABILITY point of view. As a product (stability, crash, virus), I never had any issues with both Windows 7 and Windows 8.
