Samsung Galaxy S4 Preliminary Report

Posted by Sam Hobbs News | Mobile & Embedded Mar 14, 2013
The Samsung Galaxy S4 was announced today.

The new Samsung Galaxy S4, announced today, has an improved look and feel. It comes in a polycarbonate case that is either black or white. It weighs 4.6 oz. and has a quad-core 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 in the U.S. (8-core 1.8GHz Exnyos 5 Octa elsewhere). It uses Android Jelly Bean. It has a 5-inch HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080.

The following is a relatively random list of items mentioned in the announcement. Additional information and more accurate information will be provided soon by me or another member.

  • Dual cameras allow the picture taker to be in a picture/video and allows Dual Video Call, which provides dual cameras for video calling and chatting
  • Smart Scrolling (Eye-scrolling) which can scroll or pause based on face/eye movement
  • IR LED remote control
  • 3G and 4G LTE
  • IR gesture sensor and infrared humidity sensor
  • 13-megapixel camera
  • S-translator: Live translation (text) using text-to-speech and speech-to-text; partially done locally (without a connection) allowing communication without language barriers
  • S-Voice (voice recognition?)
  • Optical Character Recognition
  • Knox security for one phone for work and personal use separately
  • S Health for monitory your health

If you need full features you can visit the Samsung site http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxys4/. In essence "S Health" is an app which in conjunction with some hardware accessories provided by Samsung can be used to track workouts, food/calories intake etc. My favorite is the IR blaster for remote control.

I am not sure of the details of "S Health". The IR gesture sensor and infrared humidity sensor are new sensors but they seemed to be clear in their announcement that those are the only new sensors built into the device. All other sensors in the device are relatively common. They did mention that additional accessories will be available for things like blood pressure and blood sugar (or is it insulin?). The S4 is not yet available and details are not as accessible as we prefer.

I am impressed with what Samsung to fit in one small device. It will take Apple a while to catch up to a 1920x1080 display and 13MP camera. I was curious what is "S Health" for monitoring health? Is this an app or some hardware?

Thank you, Naveen. Yes I made a mistake and said 4S instead of S4. Actually, I fixed it. Then when I changed the Category I lost everything. The entire article was gone. I felt like destroying something, I was so upset. Fortunately I had an earlier copy so I used it but unfortunately I missed that one mistake. If the Eye Scrolling is not yet available then they sure did not make that clear in the introduction; I watched it live. I assumed there would be inaccuracies such as that. I would have expected more inaccuracies. I will revise this article soon and I might just create another one.

There is a small mistake, the name of the phone is S4 and the Eye-Scrolling feature is not available yet, the feature for that part is to tilt the phone up or down to scroll the web page.
