Bing Maps Preview Now Available With 3D Imagery

Microsoft announced (on the Bing search blog) the availability of a preview version of the revamped Bing Maps app for Windows 8.1 devices. According to Microsoft, this app is the first step towards “introducing a new way to explore the world”. The new Maps experience is fully 3-D. The new preview app works on the touchscreen as well as on the desktop devices.

The preview of Bing Maps is available now for free download in the Windows Store, it includes more than 70 cities maps worldwide. These range from Canberra in Australia to Bremen, Germany and Portland, Maine. According to Microsoft, the app was completely designed taking into consideration the clarity, details, and more mapping features that should be expected in a modern app.

As the app was designed for Windows 8.1, it has the benefits of features such as the Snapview, Windows notification and Live Tile support. One of the new features which users would notice in Bing Maps is the StreetSide, which allows users not to lose the outlook of the surrounding landscape with a “bubble view” that dynamically rotates as the user turns the map.

Favorite routes can also be saved in the Bing Maps preview and if the user specifies a certain time, the app then automatically starts to provide the traffic notification along those routes at the provided time even if the app isn’t active. The In-app search feature present in this app allows the users to search for a restaurant or a venue and instantly get a route overlay.

Microsoft has also brought a certain new features like the traffic notifications on favorite routes, Local Scouts to find the nearby places, and even an OpenTable integration for quick reservations.
