Chromebook Sales Outrun Mac in The US In Q1 2016

According to the IDC data that was shared during a session at the Google I/O developer conference, the shipment of Chromebook outpaced Mac in the US for the first time.

IDC in April estimated that Apple had sold around 1.8 million Macs, giving the company around a 13 percent market share and accounting for an increase of 5.6 percent year over year. This had put Apple in the fourth position for PC sales in US and worldwide, behind Lenovo, HP and Dell, however at that point of time IDC did not break out sales of Chrome OS devices versus other PC sales.

However, it is now saying Chrome OS passed Mac OS X during the quarter, and we know the Chromebook manufacturer combined sold at least  the1.8 million it estimates Apple sold. Both the numbers are just estimates as not all of the companies provide specifics on the sales of Chrome OS devices versus PC sales for devices running on Windows and other operating systems.

In the comment on the milestone for Chrome OS devices via The Verge, IDC analyst Linn Huang states,

"Chrome OS overtook Mac OS in the US in terms of shipments for the first time in 1Q16, Chromebooks are still largely a US K-12 story."
