GitHub Victim of Cyber Attack

In U.S. Coding Website GitHub Hit With Cyberattack the The Wall Street Journal reports that, beginning Thursday and continuing today, GitHub has been experiencing problems with Distributed Denial-Of-Service (DDOS) attacks that are likely intended for the popular Chinese search engine Baidu Inc. Security experts say it might be an attempt by China to shut down anticensorship tools. Users might have difficulty reaching GitHub.

Specifically, two GitHub pages were being attacked. One page is run by Greatfire.org and helps Chinese users bypass government censorship. The other links to a Chinese language website's version of the New York Times.

The GreatFire.org web site has been under attack since March 17. GreatFire provides a mirroring service for sites such as Google, BBC and The Tibet Post that would otherwise be blocked by China's web censorship systems.
