The first updated launch of the app will come witha pop-up which will advise the user to switch to Messenger as their default SMS app. The SMS support is still present in the app; however, it is unknown for how much longer it will be present there. The messenger app is a more superior SMS app, which comes with great implementation of Material Design and also quick support for new Android features, such as Android Marshmallow’s Direct Share.

The new update brings with it the ability to quick reply to message from a notification. The Messenger and the iOS version of Hangout have received this feature a few months back. When you tap reply from the notification, it will pop up the keyboard and message box. In case users change their mind and want to use the app to write out the reply, all they do is tap a butto,n, which is present in the top right hand corner, and the message will be saved; now you can paste it into Hangouts.
