New Features In OneNote August Update

This month Microsoft brings new updates to inking, OneNote Class and Staff Notebooks, and OneNote Web Clipper along with many other features.

Ink in OneNote for Windows 10

Microsoft has taken the new key inking updates to the next level, providing the users with much more dynamic experiences along with greater control of ink.

Ink math assistant: You will now be able to gain the assistance of digital tutor, for basic math to quadratic equations. OneNote will go on to recognize your handwriting and help you solve any formulas, by providing you with step by step instructions.

Microsoft states,

“Get the answer to your equation and learn to do it on your own for next time. Office 365 subscribers can get started today.”

Ink replay: You will now be able to save time, and stay focused, seeing the process behind the ink. You will also be able to rewind and replay ink strokes in OneNote as an Office 365 subscriber. For example, you can now label a map by hand and then go on to reveal the content at your own pace so as to help the students identify states or provide them with hints along the way. You will also be able to use OneNote in a team meeting so that you can whiteboard ideas and then later go on to replay, so as to see how your team got to the end point.

Pencil: This brings you more capabilities of pencil and paper to the digital page. You can now easily sketch out ideas with new shading abilities which add details and depth to your drawing. You will also be able to write out a quick note or first draft in pencil for the natural “work in progress” feeling of pencil on paper. However, in order to use OneNote’s new pencil feature, it is necessary for you to have Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

Microsoft has also updated OneNote Web Clipper, so that you are in better control of what you clip from the web. The new available features are given below, as per the official blog
  • Bookmarks: You can now easily save a simple link and description of the page.
  • Text and image selection—Right-click any image or selection or text on a web page and clip the content. For the selected content, you will be able to highlight and change font type and size in the preview window.
  • New Edge extension—With the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, the OneNote Web Clipper extension is now available for the Edge browser.
Microsoft states,

“Whenever we make major changes, we’ll provide a “change log” of what we updated—so you can stay up-to-date with what’s new with the OneNote Web Clipper.”

All these features are now available on all browsers which include Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox and Internet Explorer. You can now easily update to the latest version of your extension or download the extension at www.onenote.com/clipper.

Learning Tools for OneNote supports more languages and themes and is now generally available

Learning Tools for OneNote are now out of preview and generally available for OneNote 2013 and 2016 desktop apps, along with numerous new languages and features, such as new color themes. Microsoft claims that this tool would help everyone to improve their reading as well as writing skills, which includes gifted learners, students with learning differences and students with combinations of unique abilities.

Use shared iPads more effectively in the class room

Shared iPad is a new iOS 9 feature to benefit schools that share devices among students and still want to provide a personalized experience for each of them. Before class begins, teachers can assign any student any shared iPad. When students sign in to the shared iPad, new OneNote features help them use their personalized OneNote across multiple shared iPads by doing the following, as per the official blog:
  • Office 365 sign-in credentials roam with students when they sign in to OneNote.
  • Notebook Picker helps open the right recent notebook at the beginning of class.
  • New syncing indicator makes it easier to manage content saving to the cloud, including attachments, so students never lose work when they leave their shared iPad.
Insert PDFs and Word documents in OneNote Online

You will now be able to insert PDFs as well as Word documents straight into the pages of your notebooks, and the experience is quite similar to that of the desktop. You can now easily work with documents in the classroom without needing to leave OneNote and at the same time, also keep students focused as well as lessons organized.
Microsoft concluded by saying,

“One last thing: We’re excited to announce that a OneNote Reddit AMA is taking place on September 1, 10 a.m.–12 p.m. PDT. Recent OneNote converts and longtime users alike, join us for the AMA to ask questions, provide feedback and have fun.”
