This would mean that you can now have a conversation with someone who does not speak the language you speak, and Skype will translate whatever you say into that person’s language. And, when the other person replies back to the conversation, it will be translated in your language.

For the moment, the live translation will only work on six languages, they are as stated below:
  • English
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Mandarin
  • Spanish
For text messaging, Skype supports 50 languages.

In their blog post Skype states, “Skype Translator relies on machine learning, which means that the more the technology is used, the smarter it gets. We are starting with English and Spanish, and as more people use the Skype Translator preview with these languages, the quality will continually improve. We also need your help to expedite new language releases. So make sure you sign up, let your language preferences be known and get involved! ”

Microsoft said that the new desktop update for Skype will be available in a few weeks, and this new update will be available on Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10. However, it is yet not known whether these new features will be available on Mac, iOS/ Android version.

Skype states, “This is just the beginning of a journey that will transform the way we communicate with people around the world.”
