AWS Is Setting Up First Quantum Computing Applications Lab In India

The project brings the first quantum computing applications lab on AWS Cloud to support a government’s science and technology mission at a country level.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in India is building a Quantum Computing Applications Lab, in partnership with AWS, in order to accelerate quantum computing-led research and development and enable new scientific discoveries.

This is Ministry's first initiative in the country to give scientific, academic, and developer communities in india the access to a quantum computing development environment in the cloud. The project brings the first quantum computing applications lab on AWS Cloud to support a government’s science and technology mission at a country level.

Well, Quantum computing is an evolving field that harnesses the quantum mechanics law to build powerful tools to process information. Though there is a lot of potential with quantum computing, researchers still face challenges in their quest. Key challenges are limited access to quantum computing hardware and expertise, and the complexity involved in infrastructure setup and management.

The new Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Quantum Computing Applications Lab addresses these challenges, offering quantum computing to the research community via on-demand access to Amazon Braket, a fully managed quantum computing service, at no cost.

Amazon Braket offers a development environment to allow users to explore and design quantum algorithms, and test and troubleshoot them on simulated quantum computers. Users will be able to run them on different quantum hardware technologies from providers including D-Wave, IonQ, and Rigetti.

Ajay Sawhney, secretary, MeitY, said "that empowering the scientific community in India with advanced technologies will play a crucial role in enabling India to achieve world-class scientific solutions."
