Facebook launches mobile messaging app

On Tuesday 9 Aug, Facebook has launched a standalone messaging app for mobile devices that allows for messaging to friends and small groups. The app allows messaging to both Facebook friends and phone contacts. Messenger acts as an extension of Facebook messages, so you can view your full history of mobile messaging on the web.

Zhang, in a blog post, highlighted Messenger’s group messaging capability. People no longer have to log-in to the Facebook app to get and send messages. Like with Facebook’s web interface, people can see SMS text messages, chat messages, emails and Facebook messages all in one place.

It’s an interesting move for Facebook, setting up a completely separate app just for messaging. It shows Facebook’s emphasis on mobile and the company’s increasing focus there. Facebook still doesn’t have an iPad app, but it’s widely expected.
