Microsoft Introduces WSL 2

WSL 2 will empower users to do more with a Linux environment on Windows.

Recently, Microsoft unveiled the latest architecture for the Windows Subsystem for Linux: WSL 2 which according to the company will bring dramatic file system performance increases, and full system call compatibility. WSL 2 will allow you run more Linux apps such as Docker
The company said that WSL 2 powers the Windows Subsystem for Linux to run ELF64 Linux binaries on Windows. It uses an entirely new architecture that uses a real Linux kernel.
The company will ship a real Linux kernel with Windows that will make full system call compatibility possible. In initial builds, Microsoft has planned to ship version 4.19 of the kernel as this kernel has been specially tuned for WSL 2.

Microsoft explained that WSL 2 uses the latest and greatest in virtualization technology to run its Linux kernel inside of a lightweight utility virtual machine .
According to the company, in the initial tests, WSL 2 has been found running up to 20 times faster as compared to WSL 1 when unpacking a zipped tarball, and around up to 5 times faster when using git clone, npm install and cmake on various projects.
You will be able to avail firstmost builds of WSL 2 through the Windows insider program by the end of June 2019.
