Microsoft Rolls Out "Together Mode" In Teams

Microsoft announced a set of new features in Microsoft Teams that according to the company makes virtual interactions more natural, more engaging, and ultimately, more human.

Microsoft has been working on a new "Together Mode" for Teams since the COVID-19 pandemic began. The feature is a new meeting experience that makes use of AI segmentation technology to digitally place participants in a shared background. Together Mode makes it feel like you’re sitting in the same room with everyone else in the meeting.

"Together mode makes meetings more engaging by helping you focus on other people’s faces and body language and making it easier to pick up on the non-verbal cues that are so important to human interaction." wrote the company.

The feature is released with auditorium view now, which can handle up to 49 participants, and will be generally available in August. Microsoft said that it will bring more views to Together mode in the future.

The other new mode the company is introducing is Dynamic view, which brings a set of enhancements that gives you more control over how you see shared content and other participants in a traditional video meeting.

New controls such as the ability to show shared content and specific participants side-by-side enable you to personalize the view to suit your preferences and needs. Dynamic view builds on the meetings enhancements Microsoft announced last month, which include large gallery view and virtual breakout rooms.

Large gallery view enables you to see video of up to 49 people in a meeting simultaneously, and virtual breakout rooms enables you to split meeting participants into smaller groups for things like brainstorming sessions or workgroup discussions.

Microsoft is also bringing Video filters to Teams. The option allows you to subtly adjust lighting levels and soften the focus of the camera to customize your appearance.

Some of the other new updates in Teams include Reflect messaging extension, Live reactions, Chat bubbles, Speaker attribution for live captions and transcripts, and Interactive meetings for 1,000 participants and overflow.
