.NET 5 Announced

Microsoft just announced the next version of its .NET will be .NET 5, that will integrate classic .NET Framework with the open source .NET Core.

Recently, Microsoft revealed that the next release after .NET Core 3.0 will be .NET 5, which company has planned to release in November 2020.
Delivering a single solution, .NET 5 will replace .NET Core 3 and .NET Framework 4.8

The company said that the .NET 5 project will bring a single .NET runtime and framework that can be used everywhere and that has uniform runtime behaviors and developer experiences. .NET 5 will expand the capabilities of .NET by taking the best of .NET Core, .NET Framework, Xamarin and Mono.
Key features and improvements that .NET is going to bring:
  • .NET 5 will bring more choice on runtime experiences.
  • Java interoperability will be available on all platforms.
  • You will get Objective-C and Swift interoperability support on multiple operating systems.
  • Also, Microsoft has planned to extend CoreFX to support static compilation of .NET, smaller footprints and support for more operating systems.

Microsoft is skipping the version 4 to avoid the confusion for users that are familiar with the .NET Framework, which has been using the 4.x series for a long time. Also, the company wanted to clearly communicate that .NET 5 is the future for the .NET platform.
