Windows 11, the latest version of Microsoft's computer operating system, is now officially available for download across the world. The new OS has been released as a free upgrade on eligible Windows 10 PCs.

Windows 11 will also come installed on new Windows PCs from manufacturers like Acer, Dell, HP, Asus, and Lenovo, among others; starting today.

The latest OS supports a variety of form factors like convertibles and 2-in-1 devices alongside traditional desktops and laptops. It is also compatible with a range of silicon from companies including AMD and Intel.

Windows 11 comes with a fresh user interface that brings a centrally aligned Start menu and upgraded fonts as well as notification sounds. The latest OS also integrates Teams to enable users connect with others over chat, voice, or video calls. The upgrade also improves multitasking with Snap Layouts and Groups. 

Version 11 also supports multiple desktops and brings a range of accessibility features like Narrator, Closed Captions, Magnifier, and Windows Speech Recognition.

Microsoft said that existing Windows 10 devices that are eligible for the Windows 11 upgrade will begin to be able to upgrade today, but it will be mostly new devices that will receive the upgrade immediately."We expect all eligible Windows 10 devices to be offered the upgrade to Windows 11 by mid-2022." noted the company.

Users can check if their device is eligible to Windows 11 upgrade using the PC Health Check app. To see if the upgrade is ready for your specific device open Windows Update settings (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update) and select Check for updates. If the device is eligible and the upgrade is ready, you will see the option to download and install, simply select Download and install.

You can now open your personalized feed with a click or a swipe from the left seamlessly as Widgets slides across the screen like a sheet of glass. "Whether it’s glancing at your day through Outlook calendar and To-Do list integrations, catching up on the latest headlines or tomorrow’s weather forecast, or viewing your favorite OneDrive photo memories, Widgets bring everything you love to your fingertips."

The new Microsoft Store on Windows brings you more apps than ever before as well as makes it easier to search and discover new content with curated stories and collections. New apps like Canva, Disney+, Zoom, the Epic Game Store and so much more are available today in the Microsoft Store on Windows.

Microsoft said that with Windows 11, it is making it easier to focus and stay in users' multitasking flow with Snap Layouts and Groups, and Desktops. Snap Layouts and Groups provides a better way to multitask and optimize your screen in a way that is visually clean. Desktops allows you to create individual Desktops that contain different sets of apps to help you stay organized and focused, and you can also customize each Desktop with its own name and wallpaper.

The new version of Windows also brings dedicated features for PC gamers including DirectX 12; an option to turn Auto HDR on and off; and DirectStorage that company first introduced on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles.

Windows 11 comes with the Xbox app pre-installed to allow users to browse, download, and play more than 100 PC games. The app allows access to Xbox Game Pass for PC (membership sold separately) to allow gamers get a series of games to play on their PCs.
