I think you mean OCR, OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is the process of recognition characters inside an image.
There are two options you can go with to use OCR in your application:
1) Implement you own OCR engine.
2) Use already implemented OCR engine.
The first option is not always a good one especially if you want a standard OCR engine with no special features.
There are many OCR engines out there, some of them are free such as Tesseract and MODI (Microsoft Office Document Imaging) and some are commercial engines such as leadtools.
From my experience, while the free engines give out good results, they provide limited features when comparing commercial ones.
