Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Development is one of the hottest areas for every .NET developer who would like to create web based applications which will be shared by a team. Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Development Cookbook by Ed Musters attempts to provide a comprehensive coverage of the various concepts of SharePoint 2010 in a cookbook style.

Chapter 1 enables you to build a fully functional SharePoint 2010 server and an integrated SharePoint development environment in a virtualized setting.  Chapter 2 examines the development of SharePoint 2010 development with Visual Studio.

Chapter 3 examines the development of web controls with SharePoint including user controls, web parts, web part properties, editor parts and connected web parts. Chapter 4 provides a quick introduction to SharePoint Designer 2010. The author has examined the application of the tool which you will learn while working with lists including the coverage of XSLT List View Web Part and the creation of lost forms with both ASP.NET and Microsoft InfoPath.

With the help of Chapter 5, you will learn the process for retrieval of SharePoint data via Language Integrated Query (LINQ) and via the List Data Services (REST).  Chapter 6 examines the procedure for connecting to databases or web services from within SharePoint application including wrapping of existing data in SQL Server with a custom developed WCF Data Services.

Chapter 7 examines the usage of an out of the box approval workflow and then extending with SharePoint Designer 2010. You will also learn the various workflow form types such as Association, Initiation and Task Edit.

The final chapter provides a comprehensive coverage of the various concepts associated with publishing pages, page layouts and master pages. Moreover, the author attempts to provide a non-developer overview of the other important site of Microsoft SharePoint.

The author has examined each concept in a unique and uniform style with comprehensive explanation followed by relevant steps under the heading How to do it along with appropriate screenshots and source codes.

You can view a live preview of few selected chapters from PacktLib, which is the online content portal of Packt Publishing. The book is available in both ebook and print formats, which can be purchased online through a secured payment gateway.

I feel that once you get accustomed to the content of the book it is very easy to follow other sections because of the uniformity in the presentation. The book will be very useful for those .NET developers who work with Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Development.
