How to Create a Zone Delegation in Forward Lookup Zone

Introduction

In this article you will learn how to create a Zone Delegation in a Forward Lookup Zone.

Before going through this article make sure that DNS is installed in your system, otherwise you will not be able to change the Zone Type, in fact in that case Zone will also be not available to you.

Step 1

First of all open the Administrative Tools from the Start Menu.

Now in the Administrative Tools many options will be available and one of them will be DNS, double-click on this option to open it.

Step 2

Now the DNS Manager Wizard will be opened, here on the left hand side the DNS Server will be available.

Expand the Server name under the DNS.

Under the Server Name, two Zones will be available, one will be Forward Lookup Zone and the second will be Backward Lookup Zone. Expand the Zone on which you want to work.

Now you will see that a few Sub Zones are available; under this is Forward Lookup Zone (these will only be available if you had added them previously), right-click on these Sub Zones and choose to "Add New delegation".

Step 4

Now the New Delegation Wizard will be opened, here first some information about this Wizard will be provided. Click on the "Next" Button.

On the Next page provide the domain for this delegation and then click on "Next".

Step 5

The next page is for the Name Servers, click on the "Add" button to add the Name Servers.

Provide the Fully Qualified Domain Name for this Name Server and then click on the "Ok" button.

Finally click on the "Finish" Button to complete the process of adding the Delegation.
