Manage Web Applications In SharePoint 2013 Central Administration - Part Four

Welcome to an article on how to manage the Web Applications on Central Administration of SharePoint 2013. Here, we will see how the Central Admin controls the management of web applications.

Let’s open Central Admin of SharePoint in your machine. On your Windows desktop screen, click Start >> Administrative Tools >> SharePoint 2013 Central Administration.

  • Run it as an administrator to have elevated privileges.
  • You will see the screenshot, given below.

  • Central Admin is configured under the categories given below.
  • Click on Application Management.

  • You will see Web Applications.
  • Click on "Manage Web Applications".
  • You will see the screen given below.

  • Here, we can see various options to work with the Web Applications.
  • Let’s see them from left to right in different parts of the article.

We have four categories, where the events have been categorized.

  1. Contribute
  2. Manage
  3. Security
  4. Policy

In the part 4, we will see “General Settings” Under "Manage” category.

General Settings

  1. Select the Web Application.
  2. Click on General Settings.

  • Default Time Zone
    Select the time zone you want to set for all the sites under the web application.

  • User Settings Provider:
    Choose the user provider service you want to use for the sites on the web application.

  • Default Quota Template:
    Choose a quota template for your websites or you can choose personal sites option to set a server quota.

  • Person Name Actions and Presence Settings:
    Here you can choose an option if you want to allow the user online.

  • Alerts
    You can allow or disallow the alerts on the web applications and set the limit as in how many users can be set to send alerts. Currently we have set it to 500.

  • RSS Settings
    You can allow or disallow the RSS Feeds on the sites in the selected web application.

  • Blog API settings
    You can enable or disable the blog API on the web applications and if you allow, you can make the user accept the user name and password from API.

  • Browser File Handling
    This settings makes the sites allow or disallow the sites to download other components. If we use it strictly it is preferable for the security of the servers.

  • Web Page Security Validation
    Security Validation is always set on and is kept for 30 mins so that the users can redo their operations after the security validation.

  • Send User name and password in Email
    You can set the security if users should or should not be allowed to send user name and passwords through their email.

  • Master page settings for Application layouts pages
    You can validate if you want the sites pages to adopt the master page from the _layouts folder or not.

  • Recycle Bin
    You can set the recycle bin and configure how long the deleted items should stay in the recycle bin.

  • Maximum Upload Size
    You can state the size of the document of files which can be uploaded to the sites.

  • Customer Experience Improvement Program
    You can allow or disallow the customer experience program and if you allow it, it will send the data to web site analytics.

  • Usage Cookie
    You can set if you want to choose the cookies for the web application.

Once you complete the configuration, click "OK". The web application will be ready for the users.
