Database backups are an essential part of any business continuity and disaster recovery strategy because they protect your data from corruption or deletion.

The process to backup the database is:

1. RDP to the SQL Server where you need to make the backup

2. Open SSMS from the Start Menu on the server – right click it and run it as Administrator.

3. Expand Databases

4. Select the database you want to back up and right click it and select Tasks -> Back Up…

5. In the new window that opens, click Add in the Destination box.  The directory should populate – in most cases should go to a drive other than C to a Backups directory.  Pick a meaningful name that won’t conflict with others and click OK.

6. Click Backup Options and choose Set backup compression to Compress Backup and click OK

7. Ensure the backup completes successfully
