It’s a valuable feature to use Word documents in Microsoft Dynamics CRM. Earlier this feature is available only for reports but now can be used in every entities and which is very handy even for non-technical users. This is what Microsoft technology stands for.

Users on an entity detail or list page in Microsoft Dynamics CRM can find Word Template option in command bar menu.

As there are no out of box templates available for contact so first need to create a word template using create template wizard. This wizard is also used to create excels so you can see both options are available in popup.

As the targeted action is triggered by contact entity, so filter by entity is contact. Next click Select Entity button at bottom to move forward.

Select Entities dialog contains contact fields and related relationships are available for selection. After making your selection, click on download Template. Before moving forward make sure that developer tab is visible. In case it’s not visible, first make it visible using, Go File >> Options >> Customize Ribbon and select developer menu item in Main Tabs section.

Under developer ribbon select XML Mapping Pane. Select urn:Microsft CRM from custom XML part dropdown.

Now in template all selected fields and relations are available to use in template. You can type content and embed fields along with content and save.

After completing template next action is to upload template back again in CRM to use it further. Same option you need to go through, select to upload template in CRM like before instead of selecting select entity you can use upload button.

In the next screen simply upload document. It will be listed in document summary after uploading in CRM similar to the below screen.

Once document is uploaded it is ready to use with contact entity, to use word template navigate to contact list select a contact, and go to word template section. It shows all available templates to use for targeted entity.
