SharePoint 2016 Installation In Azure With Active Directory - Part Three

In the previous articles we discussed about how to set up the environment in Azure for SharePoint 2016 installation. You can find the links to the previous articles below-

  • Part 1 describes the steps to create a virtual network for adding the VM and AD.
  • Part 2 describes the steps to create a SQL server VM, promote it to the AD role and map it to the Virtual Network.

Now the environment is all set up for Share Point installation. Lets see how to get SharePoint 2016 installed in azure. This is the final article of the SharePoint 2016 Installation in Azure Series.

Where can I get SharePoint 2016

You can get SharePoint Server 2016 RTM from here. This comes with a free six-month license. You can convert to a licensed installation at any time during the trial or after the trial has expired by entering the appropriate product key in Central Administration.

Enterprise trial product key - NQGJR-63HC8-XCRQH-MYVCH-3J3QR

Standard trial product key - RTNGH-MQRV6-M3BWQ-DB748-VH7DM

Make sure that you use Enterprise key if you want to install Project Server as a Service Application later on.

How to Install SharePoint Server 2016

Once the installer file is downloaded from the Microsoft site ,right click the image file and mount it. You can either use a image mounting software like Magic ISO to permanently mount it or the windows option to temperarlu mount it . Since the installation requires couple of restarts temporary mounting of the image using the Windows Out of the box option will force us mount the image again after each restart.

For the time being I will mount it from the Windows menu.

Run the prerequisiteinstaller application file.

Click Next.

Accept the Agreement and click on Next.

It will start configuring various roles and will take some time to complete.

Once the prerequisite are installed a restart would be required. Click on Finish to restart the system. When the System is up and running, Installer will automatically try to continue the installation. However since I had mounted the ISO temporarily the virtual drive was unmounted during restart and the Installer could not automatically continue with the installation.

You don’t have to worry if this happens to you, go to the downloaded package and Mount the ISO once again. Click on the Setup Application file. (To circumvent this issue, You can use some software like MagicISO to permanently mount the image so that after the restart it will continue with the installation).

This will set up the installation files required for installation.

Enter the license key. I have entered the Enterprise Trial key. Click on continue.

Click on Continue.

After selecting the location path for installation click on Install Now.

This will start with the installation of SharePoint Server 2016.

Once the installation is complete configuration wizard will have to be run to create Config db. Select Run Configuration wizard now.

The configuration wizard has started. It will pop up the following notification.

Click on Yes.

Select connect to new farm and click on Next.

After entering the Database Server Name, Installer Account credentials click on next.

Enter the passphrase and click on next. Make sure you note this down for future use as it will be needed when you try to connect a server to this farm.

Specify the Server role which I have selected as ‘Single Server Farm Option’. If you are connecting a separate server say search server you can use Mini Roles to associate a role to the new server.

Specify the Port Number which will be used by the Central Administration Web Application. Unless you have any specific reason, keep the authentication provider as NTLM which is the default.

Click on Next.

It will start configuring SharePoint Services.

Configuration Wizard has completed the configuration. Click on Finish.

Chose yes and click on OK.

This will take you the Service Applications creation page. You can either Start the wizard or automatically create all Service Applications in a single go else you can click on Cancel and create Service application as needed. I am starting the wizard for the time being.

Select all the Service Application that you would like to create and click on Next.

It will take some considerable amount of time depending on the number of service applications you have chosen. Once created, it will list all the service applications as above. This completes the installation and configuration of Service applications in SharePoint Server 2016.

Now you can create site collection and sites from Central Admin and get hands on with SharePoint Server 2016.
