Increase productivity by your own deadlines (for Indian employee only)

I am not a regular writer of such article but I have found that people spend more time in company then required and I can’t stop myself writing this article.

I am not a regular writer of such article but I have found that people spend more time in company then required and I can’t stop myself writing this article.

Actually I have derived this theory from my regular appraisal cycle. I was in the travelling the same boat before I met a few person who thinks that “Your Performance not equal to Time spent in Company”. Let’s look at day to day life (work) of an regular employee.

Generally from 8 hours of work employee are really productive only for 5-6 hours. They in fact wasting time more than 4 hours a day. Let’s see how.

In India it’s a custom to take Tea and Breakfast in company. Well, that will take around 30 minute. Now email checking & forwarding, that will take around 45 minute(believe me on average people waste around 45 minute for that). Talking with friends and doing some personal work, which takes around 30 minute.  After lunch employee want some time free like around 20 minutes (again email and forwards). What a waste !!!

Also people are not setting deadline for themselves. I always said to my team “Always keep your desk empty without file”. This is popular quote for the office worker but it doesn’t look impressive in software field till date. Well, why you want to keep some work pending, let’s finish it and go home. When you will see a deadline for going home at 6 PM, you will start working faster. For the same work which is going to take 2 hours, you will finish the same in 1 hour. You will skip the Tea other time pass activity. And in turn you will increase your productivity. There are some nice comments about the manager and time spent in company “If you leave late no one will notice you, but if you leave early you will meet your manager in parking”.

When employee stay more in company, they in turn wasting company’s power supply, Tea etc which are not at all useful to company because after all they are going to do same amount of work. Making employee spending only 8 hours in company will force the employee to work faster and with accuracy because they are not going to think of anything else during working time.

Also people think that staying more in front of the boss will give them better salary hike and performance appreciation. But that’s not true. At the end of the day “Smart boss” will always count the work done instead time spent.  Now companies are realizing that to make the company success they need people who can work more by staying less in company.

Many employee specially fresher(bachelor) thinks that “What to do after going home?”. What a shame. There are thousands of possibilities to spend time and make life better. Like reading books, do some creative work like take some project on hand, create a website on any idea, read feeds, Watch movies (this really helps to reboot your system), etc.

Yar come out of the office take some fresh sun light, breath the fresh air, watch the sunset. People are going to hill station to watch sunset but they never tried to see the beautiful sunset outside their house every day.

Enjoy your work and give your time to Self and family.

DK,
Please do not call me "Sir". Having few years more experience does not make me a "sir" ;)
Appreciate it.

No offense, but I think programmers should have more breaks. A coworker pointed out to me the following:  what other professional job are you thinking vigorously for up to 3-4 hours at a time?

The idea of limiting breaks for programmers is a rediculous concept.  The programmers I know can't even tear themselves away from the computer!

Also there have been studies done that shows that if you take more breaks, then you are MORE productive.

I find myself very often unable to pull myself away from a problem, but when I finally do and come back to it, I come at the problem with a fresh frame of reference.

Conclusion:  **** BREAKS ARE GOOD  ****

Take a lesson from a long-time programmer,

               productivity  !=   LESS BREAKS.
