Permission Levels (Default) in SharePoint 2013 & Office 365 - Part 1

Welcome to an article on various levels of permissions in SharePoint 2013 and Office 365. Yes it is a very important thing to understand when using or working with SharePoint.

The following are the default levels of permissions provided to us by SharePoint:

  1. Full Control
  2. Edit
  3. Contribute
  4. Read
  5. Limited Access
  6. View Only
  7. Approve
  8. Manage Hierarchy
  9. Restricted Read
  10. Restricted Interfaces for Translation
  11. Records Center Web Service Submitters

The following are the details of what a user can have access to in their specific permission levels:

  • Full Control: Users will have full control on the site.

  • Design: Users can view, add, update, delete, approve and customize.

  • Edit: Users can add, edit and delete lists; they can also view, add, update and delete list items and documents.

  • Contribute: Users can view, add, update and delete list items and documents.

  • Read: Users can view pages and list items and download documents.

  • Limited Access: Users can view specific lists, document libraries, list items, folders, or documents when given permissions.

  • View Only: Users can view pages, list items and documents. Document types with server-side file handlers can be viewed in the browser but not downloaded.

  • Approve: User can edit and approve pages, list items and documents.

  • Manage Hierarchy: Users can create sites and edit pages, list items and documents.

  • Restricted Read: Users can view pages and documents, but cannot view historical versions or user permissions.

  • Restricted Interfaces for Translation: Users can open lists and folders and use remote interfaces.

  • Records Center Web Service Submitters: Users can submit content to this site using Web Services.

Here they are all the default levels of permissions present in SharePoint 2013 and Office 365.
