I am not an expert in this as you are. It was my understanding that an address consists of three parts, the domain name and other parts such as that, the port number and the protocol For beginner network programmers it might help to emphasize that the same URL including port number can be used with different protocols. Okay, now I remember. I am thinking of connections. A connection address (or something like that) includes the protocol I think it helps for beginners to understand that.

For the history, thank you for giving credit to UNIX as the initial environment of sockets. Also, some people might be interested in knowing that Microsoft wrote similar classes for MFC for C++ before .Net existed. I assume that the .Net classes are derived from the MFC classes.
