Migrating Azure VPN Gateway SKU and Public IP Address.

Introduction

Microsoft announced that the Basic Public IP Address and the Legacy VPN Gateway SKU (Standard / VpnGw1-5) will be retired on September 30, 2025. However, Microsoft has extended the VPN Gateway SKU migration deadline until March 2026. Previously, Microsoft introduced a tool called β€œMigrate,” which has now been replaced by the new migration tool β€œMigrate to Standard IP,” launched in September. This tool will migrate both your VPN Gateway SKU and Public IP SKU. In this article, we will explore how to migrate a Basic Public IP address associated with a VPN Gateway.

The Existing Option

migrate

Step 1. Go to the VPN Gateway and select 'Configuration' under Settings. You will find the 'Migrate to Standard IP' tab.

Step 2. Click the Prepare button to initiate the migration process. This step typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes to complete.

During this time, you may see the message: β€œThe gateway is updating, please wait for it to finish and retry.”

Step 3. Once the preparation is completed, we will activate the Commit Button.

Step 4. Once we click the Commit button, the migration process will begin, and it will clean up old resources.

 Conclusion

Once completed, we can verify the VPN Gateway SKU and the Public IP SKU.

A couple of questions from the migration.

Dynamic IP Address

  • There are no issues if your Public IP address assignment is Dynamic; this will never change.

VPN SKU

  • If your VPN Gateway SKU is Standard or VpnGw1, it will be migrated to VpnGw1AZ.

  • If your VPN Gateway SKU is VpnGw2, it will be migrated to VpnGw2A.Z
