Restoring Readable Crash Logs from Obfuscated .NET Builds: A Field Guide to Symbol Map Deobfuscation

```csharp
using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Linq;
using System.Xml.Linq;
using System.Text.RegularExpressions;
public sealed class SymbolMap
{
    // Key: obfuscated full name like "a.b.a(System.String,System.Decimal)" -> original
    private readonly Dictionary<string,string> _lookup;
    private SymbolMap(Dictionary<string,string> lookup) => _lookup = lookup;
    public static SymbolMap Load(string xmlPath)
    {
        var doc = XDocument.Load(xmlPath);
        var dict = new Dictionary<string,string>();
        foreach(var type in doc.Descendants("Type"))
        {
            string oldType = (string)type.Attribute("Old");
            string newType = (string)type.Attribute("New");
            dict[newType] = oldType;
            foreach(var m in type.Elements("Method"))
            {
                string oldM = (string)m.Attribute("Old");
                string newM = (string)m.Attribute("New");
                string sig = (string)m.Attribute("Sig") ?? "()";
                // Build keys like "a.b.a(System.String)"
                string obfKey = $"{newType}.{newM}{sig}";
                string origKey = $"{oldType}.{oldM}{sig}";
                dict[obfKey] = origKey;
                dict[$"{newType}.{newM}"] = $"{oldType}.{oldM}"; // fallback without sig
            }
        }
        // Order by descending length for safe replace
        return new SymbolMap(dict.OrderByDescending(k=>k.Key.Length)
                                .ToDictionary(k=>k.Key, k=>k.Value));
    }
    public string DeobfuscateStackTrace(string rawTrace)
    {
        // Match frames like "at a.b.a(String, Boolean)"
        var pattern = @"at\s+(?<obf>[\p{L}\p{N}\.\?\$`<>_]+)(\([^\)]*\))?";
        return Regex.Replace(rawTrace, pattern, match =>
        {
            var obf = match.Groups["obf"].Value;
            var args = match.Groups[2].Value ?? "";
            if (_lookup.TryGetValue(obf + args, out var orig))
                return $"at {orig}{args}";
            if (_lookup.TryGetValue(obf, out orig))
                return $"at {orig}{args}";
            return match.Value; // leave framework frames untouched
        });
    }
}
// Usage
// var map = SymbolMap.Load("2f3a9c1-v2.1.3-map.xml");
// string readable = map.DeobfuscateStackTrace(customerLog);
```

Why longest-match? If you replace a before a.b.a, you corrupt the full signature. Sorting by length solves 90% of ambiguous replacements.

5. Putting It Into Support Workflow

Our team now follows a simple rule:

1. All obfuscated releases write AssemblyInformationalVersion = git SHA + build number into the assembly.

2. On exception, the client logs the raw ToString() plus that version header.

3. An Azure Function triggered by support ticket automatically downloads the matching map from private blob storage and posts the deobfuscated trace to Slack channel #prod-crashes.

Result: support sees this:

```
System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set...
   at TradingApp.Billing.PaymentProcessor.ValidatePayment(String invoiceId, Decimal amount)
   at TradingApp.UI.DashboardView.OnPayClick(Object sender, EventArgs e)
```

Instead of two hours guessing, the on-call engineer knows to check ValidatePayment for a missing DI service.

6. Pitfalls That Break Even a Perfect Map

6.1 JIT Inlining Eats Frames

The JIT compiler may inline a small method, so it never appears in a stack trace, map or no map. For audit-critical paths like license validation or payment authorization, force a real frame:

```csharp
[MethodImpl(MethodImplOptions.NoInlining)]
public static void ValidatePayment(string invoiceId, decimal amount) { ... }
```

6.2 Control Flow Obfuscation vs. Line Numbers

High-intensity control flow scrambles IL blocks. Your PDB sequence points may no longer map to lines. The XML map will still tell you which method failed, even if :line 42 is gone. That's still enough for triage — log method parameters separately via structured logging.

Version Mismatch Is Silent

The most common failure: using a map from a local Release build to decode a CI Release build. The tokens will be different. If deobfuscation suddenly produces nonsense, your map retention failed. Always index maps by commit hash.

7. Security Checklist Before You Go Live

* Map files encrypted at rest (Azure Blob SSE + private container), access via managed identity only.

* Retention policy: keep maps for as long as you support that version in the wild — typically 2-3 years.

* CI task fails build if map generation disabled for Release configuration.

* No map file ever copied to $(OutputPath), publish folder, or installer.

* Decoder tool lives only inside VPN, not in customer-facing diagnostics.

Obfuscation is not about making debugging impossible for you. It's about making reverse engineering uneconomical for others while preserving a private backdoor for your own diagnostics. The XML rename map is that backdoor — if you treat it as a first-class secret build artifact and automate its use.
