Apple just released its iPhone 12, the iPhone ever. Do you wonder what makes iPhone the best iPhone ever? Why should you buy iPhone 12? And what are different models of iPhone 12? Let's look at what makes iPhone 12 the best smartphone ever.
When you buy the new IPhone 12, you know that it’s a faster, sleeker model, with a better camera and improved battery life. But what makes these updates possible? This article expands upon each topic listed below.
- 5G Network
- A14 Bionic
- Pro Camera
- New Design
- New Accessories
- iOS 14
5G Network
5G is the update that promises to transform the way people live and work through radically faster internet and download speeds.
It’s the next generation of wireless technology with a higher bandwidth, which means it can support multiple devices at once without slowing down. There is even talk about 5G supporting self driving cars in the future!
There are two main differences between the current 4G LTE Network and the new 5G that’s compatible with IPhone 12.
The first difference is that carrier networks are not capable of supporting the “minimum 1 Gbps with 1 millisecond of latency required” to support 5G, according to wilsonamplifiers.com. What this means is that the closest you can get to experiencing a true 5G Network connection is through in-home 5G wifi.
The second main difference between 4G LTE and 5G is that it’s 10 times faster than 4G LTE. This means that you could download a 2 hour movie within a matter of seconds rather than minutes.
How does 5G work?
5G is fast. But what makes it so fast and powerful that it could potentially support self driving cars? 5G uses millimeter wave technology, also known as high frequency radio waves.
There are also three different versions of 5G. The High Band version is the fastest, but reaches the shortest distance. This means that your devices have to stay relatively close, or even plugged in to your modem for the fastest possible internet speeds.
Buildings, street signs and even leaves on trees interrupt the high frequency radio waves of the high band version, so it’s difficult to implement 5G into densely populated cities.
The Lower Band version reaches longer distances but isn’t as fast as the High Band version.
Then of course, there is a goldilocks band of 5G that has a medium-fast speed, and reaches a medium distance. According to electronics.howstuffworks.com, instead of building new cell towers to support the 5G network, providers build the 5G infrastructure on preexisting cell towers and buildings.
A14 Bionic
Similar to how the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, the A14 Bionic is the powerhouse of the iPhone 12, and the most powerful one that the iPhone has ever seen.
So what makes the A14 Bionic so powerful?
- Two high performance cores for supporting high demand tasks like large downloads called firestorm
- Four high efficiency cores to support battery life called icestorm
- A 16 core neural engine that supports 11 trillion operations per second
- 4 core GPU (30% improvement of graphics)
- Second generation machine learning accelerators
What all of the above information boils down to, is simply “image recognition, natural language learning, analyzing motion, and more,” according to Apple.com.
Pro Camera
The new Pro Camera includes dual lenses that allow for low light photography as well as depth mapping technology. The wide lens allows for 27% more light in shots whether they are taken day or night.
As for the video quality, the iPhone 12 has the highest quality video of any smartphone. It’s the only iPhone that is able to capture, playback, and edit HDR footage with dolby vision, according to Apple.
Thanks to the new A14 Bionic, the iPhone 12 uses AI and machine learning to recognize scenes and adjust image settings automatically.
New Design
The new iPhone 12 isn’t just aesthetic. It’s also extremely practical.
So here is what to expect on the outside of the iPhone 12,
- iPhone 12 Pro
- iPhone 12 Mini
- Stainless Steel Vertical Band
- Tighter Borders
- Ceramic shield
- MagSafe Technology
- New Pacific Blue Color
iPhone 12 Pro Design
The edge of the iPhone 12 Pro is a stainless steel vertical band. This aids in the drop performance, and makes it even more spill and accident resistant than before.
These bands are extremely durable and come in four finishes including silver, graphite, gold, and all New Pacific Blue
Tighter Borders
Tighter borders mean a much bigger 6.1 inch display screen for viewing those amazing photos you can now take because of the extremely powerful A14 Bionic Chip.
The iPhone Pro Max exhibits an even larger display screen of 6.7 inches.
A larger screen also means enjoying the new Super Retina XDR Display, which uses OLED pixels that each emit their own light. Each pixel lights up to 1200 nits, instead of on light illuminating all of the pixels at once. This overall enhances the viewing experience by allowing for extreme detail of color and light in the display.
Ceramic Shield
The ceramic shield is the other factor that improves the drop performance (4x) for the iPhone 12. How does it do this?
According to Apple, they introduce nano ceramic crystals into glass to create a clear shield, tougher than any smartphone glass, to lay flat on top of the iPhone 12 screen.
On top of that, it’s scratch resistant. Apple is able to do this by using the “dual ion exchange process” developed to reduce scratches and nicks on the back of iPhones.
Finally, this ceramic shield allows the iPhone 12 to be the most water-resistant phone yet. According to Apple, it can withstand 6 meters of water immersion for up to 30 minutes.
MagSafe Technology
MagSafe technology is a magnet in the iPhone 12 that allows you to connect accessories like magnetic iPhone wallets, and wireless chargers.
This is the same technology used in Mac computer chargers.
Apple ensures that the Magsafe Technology is easy and secure attaching for accessories as well as high power charging for wireless chargers.
Price
- The iPhone 12 Pro starts at $799
- The iPhone 12 Mini starts at $699
iPhone 12 Mini
Remember the iPhone 8? At this point, it feels practically ancient even though it came out less than five years ago. The iPhone 12 Mini is the same size as the iPhone 8, except with a larger screen.
Thanks to the tighter borders, the screen on the iPhone 12 Mini has a 5.42 inch Super Retina XDR display. That means the screen expands to the majority of the front face of the iPhone with rounded edges.
This model has most of the same features as the iPhone 12 Pro including the stainless steel vertical band, ceramic shield, tighter borders, MagSafe technology, and the new Pacific Blue color.
According to Apple, the iPhone 12 Mini is the smallest, thinnest, lightest 5G phone.
Accessories
In Apple’s efforts to stay mindful about the environment, they removed excess accessories from the packaging of the iPhone 12, including earbuds, and USB-A lightning charging cables. This results in a smaller iPhone box, and much less waste.
What the iPhone 12 box includes, is the fast charging USB-C lightning charging cable that is compatible with existing USB-C power adapters and charging ports.
The iPhone 12 Pro, Max, and Mini are all equipped to incorporate necessary accessories to make your lives easier, thanks to the new Magsafe Technology.
Some of the MagSafe compatible accessories that are available for additional purchase include,
- MagSafe cases
- MagSafe wallets
- MagSafe wireless chargers
IOS14
With a new iPhone, comes a whole operating system. Although this update is offered on many iPhone and Apple devices, it is still important to understand the new features of this update, especially if you have an app in the Apple App Store.
Some highlights for the new IOS14 operating system are as follows,
- Widgets
- App Library
- Compact UI
- Top hits in Search
- Pinned Messages
- New Memoji
- New Maps
- Web Page Translation
- Siri- Expanded Knowledge
- Home Controls
- Car Keys
- Car Play
- Air Pods
- App Clips
- Privacy
There are a lot of new updates, to say the least. Most importantly, the design guidelines have changed as well.
Design guidelines dictate what can go in the Apple App store, when and for how long. Historically, the IOS design guidelines are arbitrary and cause outrage among many companies when their apps are thrown out of the app store without rhyme or reason.
Therefore it is imperative for anyone with an IOS compatible app to stay up to date on the new design guidelines for IOS14.
