Why Should I Use Silverlight?

  An update about Silverlight. Now it is time to keep Silverlight out of the box. As Silverlight is nearing the end of life, so the companies that still depend on it should quickly migrate to a newer technology platform.

    Silverlight as a product is done. I know some companies that have products built in Silverlight are either using those products or upgrading them to newer technologies.

  Arvind, you have a good perspective of Silverlight but eventually Silverlight will die. As per I know and read, Microsoft has no plans to continue Silverlight after Version 5. It's not that Microsoft does not want to support. SL wasn't use widely in major companies and it had very less adoption among enterprises. Small companies are using it. Then HTML 5 came along and now Metro style. These two new and exciting technologies will definitely kill Silverlight.     Mahesh, I agree with your opinion, I have read your article long back ago.. But, my intention was to just tell about Why/Where silverlight can be used. HTML 5 & Metro app are new technologies those are making silverlight to die. Currently i am working metro app. But thing is i feel, silverlight would be better choice for business line of application and WP 7 native app. Thanks!!

    Yes Arvind. This is good to see real developer's perspective. Still, applications are being built in Silverlight and SL will still be around for a long time. Microsoft is still planning to release SL 5. So who knows. You never know they may still continue SL. XAML will always be there (WPF, Silverlight, and Metro use it). So MS may modify current SL and still keep it.

  Silverlight is dead ! Just look at the blogs of the so called Silverlight evangelists... they are all quiet, and have been for quite some time. Microsoft is killing it off Silverlight.

  Nice to see a positive post about Silverlight for once. Still, you need to speak about the drawbacks when you speak of Silverlight. Especially the fact that Silverlight is not "metro compatible", and will suffer of the "no plugin in web browser" war.

    Yes. That's true.. there are some drawbacks with silverlight. First of all whenever we launch silverlight app, it downloads XAP file into client machine. So, for secured application like banking , i feel its not good. But you can see one of banking app using silverlight here http://www.infusion.com/Our-Work.aspx?cat=1&sub=1. Also it does not run on Linux independently without moonlight. But as per my knowledge, Windows 8 Metro app is totaly different from silverlight technology. Because, it is not a silverlight. Even though,Metro app uses XAML, but not a silverlight. WINRT will take care of metro app. But in silverlight silverlight CLR will take care. One more thing is,In metro app there are two browsers, Metro browser and normal one(ie). Metro browser supports only for metro style apps. it does't allow to run any plugin( including flash). So, We can't say like silverlight is not supports with metro app is a draw back. What is your's opinion?.... Thanks.

    Hi, You're right, Silverlight will be able to work on Windows 8 for a few moment, in desktop mode. Still, it will look outdated compare to Metro and Html 5. As other comments and posts suggests, Silverlight is definitely no more a main Goal for Microsoft, and the mix of HTML5 and Metro app will slowly kill it, even for business application as not enough enterprise use it today to make it a "standard". So to be more precise, the main drawback is the not smooth integration of Silevrlight in Windows 8, showing that Microsoft shifts his strategy to be more compliant with the current market needs.
