Components of Work IQ
Work IQ serves as the intelligence layer for Microsoft 365 Copilot and its agents, enabling Copilot to understand you, your role, and your organization.
Data: It starts with your work data, the valuable knowledge embedded in your emails, documents, meetings, and chats, which captures how work happens.
Memory: Your unique style, preferences, habits, workflows, and relationships essentially your personal “work chart,” not just your org chart.
Inference: Finally, inference brings data and memory together to draw meaningful connections, surface insights, and anticipate the following best action well beyond what traditional connectors can achieve. For example, Copilot can recommend the right agent for a task based on your intent and prompt.
Intelligence Layer
With Work IQ for custom agents, you can leverage this intelligence layer to create agents tailored to your specific workflows and business requirements. It enables secure, permission-aware grounding that adheres to existing sensitivity labels, compliance rules, audit trails, logging, monitoring, and policy enforcement. Work IQ can be accessed through Copilot Studio or via API for professional code–based agent development.
Custom agents powered by Work IQ can be used with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license or through consumption-based billing. Together, Copilot and Work IQ-enabled agents unlock the full potential of your organization’s knowledge, driving greater efficiency and impact across your business.
Agent Mode in Microsoft 365:
Experience a new level of productivity with Microsoft 365 Copilot using Agent Mode across Office apps. You can now create high-quality Office documents whether you begin in Copilot chat or directly within the apps. Agent Mode in Excel lets users choose between Anthropic and OpenAI reasoning models. Agent Mode in Word is now generally available, while Agent Mode in PowerPoint is accessible through the Frontier program.
Additionally, new Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Agents enable you to produce professional-grade documents, spreadsheets, and presentations directly from Copilot chat also available via the Frontier program.
Copilot Chat offers a secure AI chat experience for work and is available to all Microsoft 365 subscribers at no extra cost. Soon, it will include Agent Mode in both chat and Office apps, and Copilot in Outlook will gain deeper understanding of your inbox and calendar. These enhancements are expected in Preview in early 2026.
