Experience of Getting Placed in TCS

Drive Date - 16-17th October, 2012

Venue - Noida Institute of Engineering and Technology, Gr. Noida

I Would like to share my experience regarding TCS campus drive, a great experience overall, TCS was the first company to visit my college for campus drive, we all were preparing and attending the workshop's from the month of august itself, all thanx to my college placement head, all n all that was a wonderful journey of 2-3 months. A 3 months of a dedicated study consisting of Aptitudes, Technical, General Awareness and other Core Personal activities finally paid off. After all efforts finally the day came when we all were hoping for the best to happen that was 16th Oct (Monday). On the day moving here and there, the little bit stress can be seen on the faces of all the students waiting for their first round selection procedure and i.e Aptitude test.

Aptitude Test

Aptitude test was the first round selection procedure we all have to face to proceed to the next round, as confirmed by my college , the aptitude pattern was changed this time, there were 30 questions instead of 35 and 80 min were given to solve that 30 questions. The level of questions was too good and to be honest was little bit at higher side. There were around 1-2 dummy questions to which you will read at least 3-4 times and at end you have to leave for the last. Friends if you want to really crack TCS apti, then make sure you are visiting and solving questions daily from m4maths.com, believe me guys if you people have a look at first 20 pages of the site, you will find at least 7-8 questions without any changes. You guys can also visit fresherworld.com to have few questions as well.

Tip to success

There are few areas to which you should concentrate and for most Time and work (You will find around 5 question from this chapter only) Probability, Computation and permutation, calculating remainders (Cases using fermat's little theorem) & Problem on trains. Friends don't waste much for your time on Numbers (including AP, GP, Fractions etc). And most importantly don't over attempt the question to which u r not sure, remember TCS look at the accuracy of answers to the question attempted and on this basis the cutoffs are declared. That's all about your aptitude Test. Moving on you will face the most typical and easiest rounds of selection that is Technical Interviews.

Technical Interviews

At the very next day after cracking your aptitude one has to face the technical interviews, these interviews consisting of your core branch questions, for an interview you must prepared with 2-3 subject like Dbms, Operating System, S/W Testing, S/W Engg., Data Structure (if you are from IT/CS background). But there are few subject you must be aware of like DBMS & OS no matter from which branch you are. For IT/CS you must be aware of at least two programming languages and must have a good proficiency in one of them, must aware latest technology, you need to brush up only your basics. Few of the question I faced was:

  1. Program to show how actually pointers work
  2. Difference b/w call by value and call by reference
  3. Program to show method Overloading
  4. How Dbms differs from Rdbms?
  5. Explain the framework of asp.net
  6. Normalization( you will face questions from normalization no matter what)
  7. And many more like these…

Tip to success

Friends be honest in front of the interviewer, if you will try to make them fool, you are droping your chances to getting selected, don't give any answers just to impress the interviewer as you know something of what he/she asked this may annoy the person sitting in front of you, if you don't know any answer politely tell them you don't know the answer or the answer is not clicking in my mind at the moment, and let them ask another question, but remember you have to answer this time, because every time you can't make the same excuse.
While interviewing technical questions they will ask you about “where you see yourself five years down the line”, “why you want to join TCS not Google” and so on, here they are putting some pressure on you, they may ask to solve you a puzzle as well. This may also happen that you face Technical and Managerial round together depending on your luck.

MR (Managerial Round)

After two successful round you will go for managerial round, in this round they ask much of your project, you need to explain them your project as much as you can, again be honest, you must be aware of your role in the project and if you are team leader of your project, you can take an advantage of it as well. They will ask about the family background and the question like as they have asked me:

1. Which language do you know the best?

My Ans: Sir, C language

2. Why C?

My Ans: Reason why C

3. But we want the student who know the java best, Now why should hire you???

My Ans: Sir, I'm completely aware of OOPS concepts, and have some basic knowledge of java as well, and if my company wants me to work on java, so I can learn java for me and the company to the best.

At this point my MR round get's over and only after few minutes I got a call for HR round.

HR(Human Resource Round)

Finally the wait get's over, now I was on the urge of getting a new life and to become a proud TCSers. HR was one of the round I was sure about myself, as I did a lot work on this particular round. The HR's were very good of TCS as one of their values are “To respect every Individual (employee). So I was interviewed by a lady, and she was very polite and encouraging, she asked me the very first and obvious question I was aware of is “Tell me about yourself”, they ask you about relocating anywhere in India, Why only TCS, What you think about the salary and they will give situation to you and ask you how you will deals with that particular situations, be prepare with the complete knowledge about TCS, the projects TCS handling, there major clients and  at the end they will let you know the bond policy they have so on. And after 40 min interview, I got over with all TCS rounds.

Tip to success

You have to be very much take care of your body structure, the gestures you make, while answering don't play with your pen or fingers, sit straight and look into the eyes of the interviewer( Don't groom though). Listen the question carefully and completely, thought a sec and then reply, never cut the interviewer as you will get full time to answer. At the end they will ask you, if you want to ask anything from interviewer, please friends don't ask any stupid questions like Mam/Sir how was my interview, Will you select me or not, Don't add any fake certificates to your folder you will carry with you, if u really want to ask something, ask about the company, the interviewer experience with TCS and such question.

So after 8 hours of tuff waiting for result at the same day, the results were announced and I was one of the few students to get selected in TCS. Before reaching my home I got my Offer Letter on my mail and finally become a proud TCSers.
