I am not a regular writer of such article but I have found that people spend more time in company then required and I can’t stop myself writing this article.
Actually I have derived this theory from my regular appraisal cycle. I was in the travelling the same boat before I met a few person who thinks that “Your Performance not equal to Time spent in Company”. Let’s look at day to day life (work) of an regular employee.
Generally from 8 hours of work employee are really productive only for 5-6 hours. They in fact wasting time more than 4 hours a day. Let’s see how.
In India it’s a custom to take Tea and Breakfast in company. Well, that will take around 30 minute. Now email checking & forwarding, that will take around 45 minute(believe me on average people waste around 45 minute for that). Talking with friends and doing some personal work, which takes around 30 minute. After lunch employee want some time free like around 20 minutes (again email and forwards). What a waste !!!
Also people are not setting deadline for themselves. I always said to my team “Always keep your desk empty without file”. This is popular quote for the office worker but it doesn’t look impressive in software field till date. Well, why you want to keep some work pending, let’s finish it and go home. When you will see a deadline for going home at 6 PM, you will start working faster. For the same work which is going to take 2 hours, you will finish the same in 1 hour. You will skip the Tea other time pass activity. And in turn you will increase your productivity. There are some nice comments about the manager and time spent in company “If you leave late no one will notice you, but if you leave early you will meet your manager in parking”.
When employee stay more in company, they in turn wasting company’s power supply, Tea etc which are not at all useful to company because after all they are going to do same amount of work. Making employee spending only 8 hours in company will force the employee to work faster and with accuracy because they are not going to think of anything else during working time.
Also people think that staying more in front of the boss will give them better salary hike and performance appreciation. But that’s not true. At the end of the day “Smart boss” will always count the work done instead time spent. Now companies are realizing that to make the company success they need people who can work more by staying less in company.
Many employee specially fresher(bachelor) thinks that “What to do after going home?”. What a shame. There are thousands of possibilities to spend time and make life better. Like reading books, do some creative work like take some project on hand, create a website on any idea, read feeds, Watch movies (this really helps to reboot your system), etc.
Yar come out of the office take some fresh sun light, breath the fresh air, watch the sunset. People are going to hill station to watch sunset but they never tried to see the beautiful sunset outside their house every day.
Enjoy your work and give your time to Self and family.

I just take a quick tea... and I find My SilverLight Client has been married to my Rest enabled services ... So bottom line is Take Tea/Coffie ====== Kill errors in code :)

No offense, but I think programmers should have more breaks. A coworker pointed out to me the following: what other professional job are you thinking vigorously for up to 3-4 hours at a time? The idea of limiting breaks for programmers is a rediculous concept. The programmers I know can't even tear themselves away from the computer! Also there have been studies done that shows that if you take more breaks, then you are MORE productive. I find myself very often unable to pull myself away from a problem, but when I finally do and come back to it, I come at the problem with a fresh frame of reference. Conclusion: **** BREAKS ARE GOOD **** Take a lesson from a long-time programmer, productivity != LESS BREAKS.

One problem I noticed in Indian companies, most of the employees do not have Internet at home. That said, they have no choice but to check their personal emails at work. Which is fine as long as you keep it to a limit. Again, every company is different. Some companies do not not care what you do at work as long as work is being done on time. This kind of managers are "Goal Oriented", not "Time Oriented". Personally, I do not care what you do at work, as long as the work is your priority and it is being done at time. After all, personal happiness at work is what makes work fun. Also, I have seen from my personal experience, you solve your problems at tea break. Not having tea at work would be a problem for me :) I drink tea every hour :) . This is what I do. If I am at a client site, I take my most complex problem, a notepad and a pen. Grab a tea, sit and try to solve the problem when I am sipping it. Most of the work I do is senior level and most of the managers do not care where I am. I give them deadlines that this work will be done in 2 days and it will be done in 2 days. If he is coming bugging me every 2 hours, I do not do that kind of work.

Hey I am not against a "Tea or Coffee" But I am against "Tea Or Coffe Break". Employee can drink or tea but don't make it a Break. You know 2 years back I was working at GCI Bangalore for project called Move.com. I was taking tea with my friends in Canteen. And suddnly my client came and told us clearly "We don't have coffee breaks in US". See their approch and expectation. Being a fresher, employee always think in terms of salary and personal confort but employee are unable to see the bigger picture. Also I have seen employee are not able to say "No". They somehow come under umbrella of manager in such a way that they are not able to jump outside that. Say "No" but in buttered way. Belive me guys saying "No" sometime will increase your value. Also about forwarding mail for 30 minute. Suppose you are a manager of a company and you are paying your employee 300 Rs per hours. Will allow your employee to move around even for 30 minute ? For that reason only big companies like TCS, Mphasis, PCS has already banned other mail accounts access in company. (Though you can access that unofficially). As every CEO says "use company's account for only official purpose". Keep your personal life away from work. :)

Dhananjay, Good sharing. Ofcourse everybody and every company will have a different exp. I think if you have a boss who looks over you every day, then you are already at the point, you oughta prove yourself. He is already getting status from you every day and in your case, it makes sense. My point was, when you are a senior developers, and your are basically your own boss and then how to get motivated yourself and get work done.

Hi Dhiren sir and Mahesh sir, I am a developer with less than 2 year of exp. I work for compnay, where I got selected from campus. Here , I work for team which is consider to be R&D team. so If I will comment something stupid , please forgive me... Now , Let, us suppose .. My manager given me task.. "Dhananjay there is something called ADO.NET Data Service CTP out there ", Explore and give me one POC in 24 hours... " Now , it is fully on my luck , that I would able to complete this task in 24 hour or in mere 4 hour. Because , I am fully dependent on Learning materials and Articles aviliable on net. If I am getting one Good article expaning everything in my first google hit.. I am lucky enough to get job done in 2 hours. and If I am getting only BIG BIG talk article .. but not helping out in reality.. it might be 24 hours is not enough... so this tehory " That How much time you have given does not matter, how much amount of work you done matters " I don't agree with this. because , after all you are not making PPT or writing document that work done is directly propotional to time given... as far as Tea/ Coffie conecrn .. we need that to code. we are knowledge worker... and we need things which acts as input for mind.... as far as forwarding mail concern.. that is the only way , to be in touch with your friend and getting some rid of regular work.. so out of 8 hr we could afford 30 min for our selves...

I agree. If a developer can put good 5 productive hours in a day, that is more than enough. That said, Google and community websites like this has made developer's life so easier, it takes us much less time than it used to 10 years ago. I remember writing most of the code myself. There was not good documentation so trying to figure out Win32 API calls, COM component methods and so on. These days, you quick search in Google, you find code snippet, copy and paste. Developers don't even try to understand the code as long as it does what they are trying to do. Here are some tips to get yourself productive and feel good about yourself. Set goals for yourself on daily basis. Write down what you are going to do today itself. Once you are done with a task, scratch that off the paper. Do not force yourself. Programming is not a manual work and does not work with the time. If you are not feeling productive and have no idea how to solve a problem, take a break. Actually, some researches say, taking small breaks helps productivity. Do not KILL time. If you come to work and watching the clock all day long, you are wasting your time more than company's. Discuss - If you see another fellow developer is not busy, get involve in discussion about new technologies, about project, and how to solve any problem. Meetings - Arrange meetings at the time when you are less productive. Time after lunch is the best time for meetings when you are really napping at your desk. Get up early - In my experience, mornings are the most productive time of the day. I get up early, work 3 - 4 hours with my couple of cups of tea, and I am all set for the day. I hope these tips help. Share more if you have any ...
