To protect against these threats, Microsoft provides Microsoft Defender for Office 365. It is a cloud-based security solution that helps keep your organization's email, files, and collaboration tools safe from modern cyberattacks.

In this article, you'll learn what Microsoft Defender for Office 365 is, why it is important, and get an overview of the Microsoft Defender portal. In the upcoming articles of this series, we'll explore each security feature in detail and learn how to configure and manage them step by step.

What is Microsoft Defender for Office 365?

Microsoft Defender for Office 365 is a cloud-based security service that helps protect your organization's email and Microsoft 365 apps from cyber threats.

It provides extra protection on top of Exchange Online Protection (EOP). It uses technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and Microsoft's global threat intelligence to identify and stop threats before they reach users.

Microsoft Defender checks emails, attachments, links, and user activity to detect suspicious or harmful content. If it finds a threat, it blocks or quarantines it to help keep your organization safe.

It protects Microsoft 365 services such as:

Exchange Online
Microsoft Teams
SharePoint Online
OneDrive for Business

Whether it's a phishing email, a harmful attachment, or a dangerous website link, Microsoft Defender for Office 365 helps stop these threats before users can open or click them.
