How To Increase Battery Life In Windows 10

Introduction

Laptop specs seem to be improving day by day but battery improvements are slow. Doing performance-intensive tasks drain the battery more quickly. Once you buy a laptop you are stuck with the battery type. But we can take some steps to ensure the battery lasts longer.

SWITCH TO POWER SAVINGS WHEN DOING SIMPLE TASKS

Go to Control Panel – Power Options. (This option may later be moved under settings.)

Change the power plan to Power saver when doing simple tasks like listening to music or watching movies. Power saver reduces CPU clock and consumes less battery.

Then you can switch back to balanced when doing performance-intensive tasks such as developing, gaming, video/photo editing, etc.

DISABLE SYNCING TASKS THAT YOU DON’T NEED

Many apps enable syncing of settings or data continuously, you can disable the ones you don’t need to prevent them from running periodically.

DISABLE BACKGROUND APPS

Go to Settings - Privacy

Then click on background Apps

KEEP BATTERY AREA OF YOUR LAPTOP COOL

If the battery doesn’t have proper ventilation and gets very hot, it can cause battery life to reduce and you may have to replace the battery sooner than expected.

REDUCE SCREEN BRIGHTNESS

Each laptop provider provides this option differently.

DISABLE BLUETOOTH AND WIFI WHEN NOT NEEDED.

Go to Setting – Networks and the Internet.

Go to Setting – Device

SET YOUR DISPLAY TO TURN OFF AUTOMATICALLY WHEN NOT IN USE

NEWER BATTERIES DO NOT NEED TO BE DRAINED

Modern lithium-ion batteries do not need to be fully drained, unlike the old NiMH. This can reduce battery life.

DON’T LEAVE BATTERY WITH LOWER THAN 50% FOR LONG PERIODS

If you're not going to use the laptop for a long period then keep at least 60% battery in it.

KEEP APPS AND OS UPDATED

Companies usually release newer versions of apps that utilize less power.

DO NOT CONTINUOUSLY USE YOU LAPTOP WITH AN EXTERNAL POWER SOURCE

Use the laptop on the battery from time to time, or else the battery will not work properly when you really need it to.
