jquery makes javascript easier to write, lots of jquery plugins are also available, Ajax is one of the reason to use Jquery.
but remember
JQuery is built on top of JavaScript and uses its methods under the hood to make DOM manipulation easier, at the cost of some performance overhead.
so your first code is better than the second which uses Jquery.
Use jquery when you need it otherwise plain javascript is always better.

Jquery is built on top of javascript, it is the fastest and easiest way of working with clientside, we can also write less number of lines of code compared with js
