What are the advantages and disadvantages of using the arrays?

Hi Vaishali.... Advantages: 1. You can use one name for similar objects and save then with the same name but different indexes. 2. Arrays are very useful when you are working with sequances of the same kind of data. 3. Arrays use reference type and so. Disadvantages: 1. Sometimes it's not easy to operate with many index arrays. 2. some environments doesn't have checking machism for array sizes. 3. An array uses reference mechanism to work with memory which can cause unstable behaviour of operating . Thanks, Pravin.

Demerits If index bounce the limit,IndexOutOfRange Exception will be raised in array but arrayList automatically expand its capacity.Example rrayList al = new ArrayList(); al.Add(10); al.Add(20); Console.WriteLine("count " + al.Count); Console.WriteLine("capacity " + al.Capacity); al.Add(30); al.Add("welcome"); al.Add(40); al.Add(50); Console.WriteLine("count "+al.Count ); Console.WriteLine("capacity "+al.Capacity );

Some more advantages of .NET arrays: * They are faster than all the other collection types and the single dimensional array is fastest of all. * They have special language syntax to support creating, initializing and accessing them. * They can have multiple dimensions and do not necessarilly need to be rectangular - they can be 'jagged' as well. * They are laid out contiguously in memory (i.e. one element after another). This means that you can traverse them using pointers in unsafe code, having first 'pinned' them to make sure they're not moved by the garbage collector in the meantime. This enables you to do even faster array operations because there's no longer any bounds checking - you have to ensure that the pointer stays within the bounds of the array yourself. And another disadvantage: * The size of an array cannot be altered once it has been created. Methods which appear to change the size of the array (such as Array.Resize) in fact create a new array of the required size and copy across the elements from the original array to the new one. If you want a truly resizable collection, then use a List instead.
