i have written a c# Console app to copy pdf files from local folder to sharepoint library. It is working fine for Small file names( less than 128 char filenames).

How can i make that code to work for larger file names also. ?

Hi,

Please try this work around. Due to SP limitation about file name, there is no direct solution. But you can use Title column of document library which allows 255 characters to store file names and trim file name to 128 character in console application before uploading to library. use a variable to store file name and then after upload set this variable to file title. Though this approach must be discussed and agreed with customer first.

Hi Priyan, Thanks for the Info. But i shouldn't modify the file name or use _ instead spaces. It is customer requirement to copy the exact filenames to sharepoint Libaray. Any other way to achieve this func'lty ?

Hi Srikkanth ,

Generally if you upload to SharePoint using SharePoint UI or via Console application there are couple of imposed limitations within the system .
1.Filename should be < 128 characters
2.Uploaded file URL say 'http:Webapp/Site/Site1/Folder 1/Folder 2 /File Name' should be < 256 characters .

We cannot change this restriction . The only workarounds are :
1. If there are spaces in file name . Replace it with _ because spaces would be encoded as %20 which further increases the length.
2. Rename the File using short hands .
3.Upload the files to Folder up in the heirarchy . If you try to upload it in a nested folder structure,the url will build up and break the upload .
