All members of a parent class are automatically inherited by a child class except constructors and destructors.

Technically, even private members of the parent class are inherited though they are not accessible from the child class.

Where you have a virtual method or property, the child class can override it with an implementation of its own.

Otherwise, if you define a member of the child class with the same name as a member of the parent class, it simply 'hides' the latter. You can avoid the compiler warning you'd otherwise get by decorating the child class member with the 'new' keyword.
