For ASP.NET try:

protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
if (!IsPostBack)
{
string text = "simile";

for (int i = 1; i <= text.Length; i++)
{
DropDownList1.Items.Add(text.Substring(0, i));
}

for (int i = text.Length - 1; i > 0; i--)
{

}

and for Windows Forms try:
