Can two different versions of the same assembly coexist in a windows folder(non-GAC) and why?

Yes,User can keep same assembly but with differenct version in same folder.Earlier this problem was know as 'Dll Hell'.But,.NET resolove it.By the way this is the important feature of .NET called as assembly versioning.All the assembly are store by default in GAC.

The physical file name is same only metadata information is different between them. Microsoft Windows differentiates two folders with their physical name not their metadata info.
