Edgar F. Codd is the inventer of the relational model for database management. Christopher J. Date was involved with the development and has written extensively of the relational model. His books are very popular, especially A guide to the SQL standard : a user's guide to the standard database language. He has written other books; the following looks interesting, but I know nothing more about them.

Apress books often has promotions. Currently we can purchase Database Design and Relational Theory by C. J. Date for US$21. Create an account and you should get information about the promotion.
