Here are a few common mistakes developers make when building websites.

Bulky graphics and images - Make sure you dont use bulky (large in size) images
Database connections - If your Web app is accessing a database, you need to make sure not to open and close connections and load data frequently. If data updates are not live, you can store data in application and session states and share from there.
Memory Issues - If your Web app is using Memory and other (such as IO) resources, you may want to ensure they are used properly and once used, they are released properly.
Users versus data load - If your users share common data, make sure to share them and NOT load same data seperately for every user comes to the site.
Server - Make sure you have a good server to handle the website load and resources
Internet Bandwidth and Speed - Make sure your website bandwidth is sufficient to handle your website load
Network Hardware - Should have network equipment that are not slow

Its not a problem with the .Net website, its just because of proper memory management. If project will be design properly and do in a proper way, it wont be slow, just look at orkut, Data Structure must be in proper way. if it's good, your site wont be slow.
