connecting windows application with online database

I am planningof developing windows based application for a company. I have to store data in an online database so that they could access the data any-time from anywhere. How could I do that?

That application has to be installed in 5 computers and all the computers need to access a common database

Yes of course you can do that, for this create your Database in any cloud database, from my interest you can go for azure, and in connection string you can give your azure credentials.

Writing a WebAPI layer is the best way to address this. Whatever is the problem being faced today taking this path, tomorrow many involved will thank you.

Azure is giving 1 month trial, you can use for testing. after that if you want you have to purchase it.

Which are the online database which I can use for free? Suggest some names.

You can connect any database over internet as long as you know the IP and you have the credentials.

Better way is to write a service layer which accesses this database and deploy it over interner and aceess that service layer from your code.

You can use WCF or Web API to write the service layer.
