1. A block is a group of statements (possibly empty) included between curly braces. It can be used anywhere a single statement can.

2. An initialization block is a block which is not contained within a method or constructor. Initialization blocks are of two kinds, static and instance, and are used to initialize static and instance members respectively.

Static initialization blocks are preceded by the static keyword but instance initialization blocks are not preceded by any keyword. The Java compiler moves the latter into every constructor which the class has.
