What is data compression. Can we compression on crores of data on production server with out any down time.

Thanks Manas Sir. Just to confirm can we do compression on billions of records. I have already gone through those links (Mostly describes concepts not real time pros and cons). But implementing those things on production server, expecting some answers who has already implemented this concepts or can share their experience
