Look at the documentation of the Trace Class and the Debug Class; they both say "by default, the "DEBUG" conditional compilation symbol is defined for debug builds, and the "TRACE" symbol is defined for both debug and release builds".

The Debug class is used for debug build but the Trace class can be used for either debug or release build.

In either case the Write() method prints a message to the debugger's output window.

For either to work, you need to define DEBUG or TRACE symbols. Normally, VS defines both DEBUG and TRACE symbols for a debug build and just the TRACE symbol for a release build.
